A portable, battery-powered hydrophone system designed for field recording of underwater sound. Optimized for immediate results, producing clean, well-balanced recordings without the need for EQ or post-processing. Just deploy, record, and listen.
From short-term monitoring to extended unattended recording, this system provides a practical, ready-to-deploy solution. Each configuration records directly to an SD card using a dedicated Zoom field recorder, with no external power or computer required.
How It’s Used
- Deploy the hydrophone at the desired depth, start the recorder, and allow the system to capture continuously to the SD card.
- After retrieval, recordings can be reviewed, processed, or analyzed using standard audio or scientific tools.
- For shorter deployments, the system can also be monitored live using headphones connected directly to the recorder.
- Can share sounds and record at the same time by using a 3.5mm patch cable and connecting the Zoom headphone jack to a powered speaker with AUX input
Important Considerations
- Recorders are not waterproof and must be placed in a suitable enclosure for outdoor or marine use
- Battery life depends on recorder model and settings (sampling rate, phantom power, etc.)
- Cable length selection impacts deployment depth and surface noise isolation (longer cable allows deeper deployment away from surface noise, but is also more cumbersome to manage)
Applications
- Entry-level hydrophone users and first-time field recording
- Ambient underwater soundscape recording
- Education and field demonstrations
- Rapid deployment when simple, reliable results are needed
